Act Of Aggression: Philosophy Of Aggression

While doing a little bit of scientific studying for the Cosmological Argument I came upon something that reminded me of one shortcoming of a lot of aggressive decks.

Khans and the New Standard

Standard has finally rotated. I’ll be the first to say that I’m glad. This past Standard season was one of the most stagnant I can ever remember. The top two/three decks were left largely unchallenged for the entire year. Despite my best efforts, and the efforts of the rest of the Magic community, those decks couldn’t be dislodged. But as well all know, everything must succumb to time and the rules of Standard. Say goodbye to Pack Rat, Desecration Demon, Sphinx’s Revelation, Supreme Verdict, Nightveil Specter, and a host of other cards that made playing anything other than those three decks in Standard … difficult. Open the doors for a brand new season.

Sultai, Boros, and Esper Control in the New Standard

Good morning Mages! Last time we talked, I went over the aggressive and midrange decks of the new Standard format. Today I will be talking about the control decks that I expect to arise, and a possible outlier that might be something neat to play if it has some more success in the future. First up is Sultai Control, in two different versions. One take is from Shaheen Soorani and one is from Brad Nelson.

Into the Mind Of a Deck Builder

Good morning, Mages! Today I want to take a step back from my twin obsessions with Standard and Modern to talk a bit about some of the various ways of deck building, as presented by Patrick Chapin and demonstrated through a few deck lists that I and/or others have used. It’ll also give you a pretty good look into how I personally think about things when I’m going through my own little checklist of things that I want to do whenever I’m creating something new, and if you learn anything from that, maybe it’ll help you later on.

The New Aggro and Midrange Decks Of Khans Standard

Good morning Mages! As of the time I’m writing this, September 29th, we are one week into the new Standard and people have clearly been hard at work experimenting with the new cards. There were two StarCityGames Open last weekend, in Indiana and New Jersey, so you’ll be seeing a lot of deck lists pop up here from there.

Act Of Excitement - Act Of Assessment Part Two

When you read a play-by-play or watch a match between your favorite players playing your favorite deck, you get a lot of information. You learn about how the deck plays out, you learn a lot about how often cards come up, and you learn how it does against different types of decks. My game plan for all of the decks in question has been simple. Either Turn or Burn (or both)!

Khans Of Tarkir: the New Face Of Constructed, Part Two

In my previous column, I went through all of the single-color cards that are in Khans of Tarkir. Today I'll be covering the multi-color ones, which are probably the most exciting bunch that I have seen since Shards of Alara block. I really think Standard will get extremely creative for the next month or so. Away we go!

Magic 2015 Home Brews

Magic 2015 is here. There are quite a few powerful cards in this core set. In fact, I think it is one of the strongest core sets in quite some time. Despite this, I don’t foresee any major changes to the current Standard landscape. There simply aren’t any back-breaking cards that will topple the triumvirate of tier one builds -- Mono-Black Devotion, Mono-Blue Devotion, and any of the Azorius Control variants. Because of this, I’ve been concentrating on post-rotation builds.

First Crack At Khans Standard

Good morning Mages! I’ve spent the last few days going through a Mardu Tokens list I like and refining it into something that I think would be workable as a first shot at the new Khans of Tarkir Standard environment. I’m still working on getting all of the cards for this, but I’m pretty sure that this is what I’m going to be sleeving up for the foreseeable future.

Mardu Blitz: My Impulsive First Thoughts for the Horde!

We have finally landed in a new plane of existence, and it is time to share my feelings on the new set. Instead of a normal set review, which I am sure we will have plenty of coming soon enough, I have decided to only focus on the Mardu Horde, as they are really the only clan that appeals to me.
