Every Card Counts: Commander: Best Budget Generals

Generals determine how you build your Commander deck. They determine colors and hopefully some kind of strategy as well. Commander is a tricky format to play on a budget, so starting with a cheap general never hurts. This week, I'll count down the best budget generals and some, ahem, general strategies that you can build around.

Pauper Duel Deck Challenge: Midnight Guard Combo Versus Red/Black Burn

A few months ago, John-Marc Ormechea got a burr under his saddle and challenged not one, not two , not three, but FOUR of his fellow Fanatic writers to individual Duel Deck Challenges. You can find all of those battles, along with their supporting documents, in the Casual Constructed section on the far left side of the page, Fanatic readers. At long last, it’s time to examine the last challenge of the summer.

White Of the Round Table – Mono White for Multi-Player

My niece has me playing round table sixty-card Magic again, and believe it or not I found it hard to play at first as none of my available decks had multi-player in mind. It turns out when all you have are White Weenie and Burn decks lying around you don't really have the ability to take down three or more opponents at once. I vowed to them that with my next paycheck I would dedicate some of the money to multi-player and I did.

Modern Duel Deck Challenge: Tomas Quinones Versus John-Marc Ormechea

John-Marc Ormechea has been challenging one Fanatic writer after another to a battle of Duel Decks. This time, the format is Modern and the opponent is Tomas Quinones. While the two players built their decks without any knowledge of what the other was cooking up, Tomas Quinones was the first to publicize his plans.

Looks Like I Have a Sliver (ouch!)

Slivers are one of the more interesting tribes. While a lot of the details about their origin and purpose still need to be hashed out by the development team over at Wizards, they still prove to be a fringe fan favorite.

Wednesday Warfare: Boudreau's Bant Bounce

Welcome back to Wednesday Warfare. This week I will discuss how a Bant deck evolved from a bin of leftover cards into its current state, but before I do that I want to announce that my playgroup has a new player. Consider this a formal welcome to Paul Boudreau as the newest member of “Rush Hour Pizza Gang.”

Roots: Pauper Duel Deck Challenge - Cheap Pilgrim Combo Thrills

John-Marc Ormechea has been on the warpath this past month, challenging any and all takers. Who am I to miss such a fun enterprise? He asked me to choose the format and I chose Pauper. In our last duel deck challenge we dueled aggro against control in the Pauper format, and John-Marc ended up the victor (in a close match I’ll have you!) This time we decided on a different direction with him taking the road of a non-interactive black/red burn deck. By sheer non-coincidence I also took a non-interactive approach but going a combo route.

Pauper Duel Deck Challenge: Mono Black Devotion Versus Boros Landfall

John-Marc Ormechea goes hard. More than a month ago, he got the idea to take on one of his fellow Fanatic writers to a duel deck challenge. But what writer should he challenge? What format should they play? Then JMO got another idea. Maybe he would challenge all of the Fanatic writers in all of the formats. First, he challenged John Impellizzeri to a battle of Standard duel decks. John-Marc prevailed with white/green aggro over a green/black control deck. This time around, John-Marc is taking on Ken Lucas with Pauper decks.

Standard Duel Decks: the Quick and the (un)dead

It wasn’t always this easy to get along in the Lone Star State. Once upon a time, you wore a shootin’ iron on your hip in order to stay alive, not to shake up the humble working folk at the burrito place. They used to say that there were two kinds of gunfighters, the quick and the dead. I’m bringing you another kind of duel today, one that we’re going to solve with brains and cardboard instead of blood and guts. I bring you a Standard duel deck challenge between two of your favorite Fanatic writers.

Act Of Dueling: Red and Black Burn

With my eyes scanning over the dossier handed to me only moments ago, I knew I was in for a fight. While I may be an aggro specialist, my upcoming opponent seems fluid to say the least. Playing anything from aggro, to control, to mid-range or even combo. So while I may go in guns blazing he might have me lined up already from a mile away, his sights trained on my twenty points of life.
