Champion is a triggered ability that triggers when the card with Champion comes into play. The ability goes onto the stack, and players may respond by playing spells and abilities of cards. When the ability resolves, the card's controller may remove a card of the appropriate type from the game or let the Champion card be sacrificed. The most important thing about Champion, however, is that the ability doesn't target any creatures. This means that the card that is championed is only announced when the ability resolves, and you cannot respond to it before the champion ability has fully resolved. For example: You have a Terminate and Volcanic fallout in your hand, and your opponent has 2 Knight of Meadowgrain on the field. When your opponent plays Thoughtweft Trio, you can do all of the following: Volcanic fallout before the Trio enters play. The knights are killed, and the Trio is Sacrificed. Terminate a Knight of Meadowgrain before the Trio comes into play or it's ability resolves. The Trio will still come into play removing the other Knight. Wait for the Champion ability to go onto the stack, then Volcanic fallout. Terminate the Trio with the Champion ability on the stack. You CANNOT kill a single Knight to prevent the Trio from coming into play.
