Well it seems that the rules thread pulled a vanishing act on us, so in its honor: Rules question thread 2.0 Ask away

Alright, nearly 2 pages of questions on progenetius in the rules thread has spurred me to post this. I ask grimmer and everyone else not to answer any more questions about protection from everything.

Here are the 4 things you need to know about protection from everything.

1) Progenetius cannot be targeted by spells or abilities. That means if the spell says TARGET creature or permenant it can't choose progenetius. If it never mentions target creature or permenant your golden (re: wrath of god kills him)

2) Progenetius is unblockable. Period.

3) All damage to progenetius is prevented. If you pyroclasm for example, you do not pass go, you do not collect 200 dollars and you do not deal 2 points of damage to progenetius.

4) Progeneius cannot be equipped or enchanted. If you have some way to move an enchantment or equipment to progenetius without targeting him you can but it will fall off as a state based effect. An enchanment would go to the yard and an equipment would just sit there and laugh at you for being an idiot.

Thats it, unless you have a specific question about the way protection from everything interacts in unique situations STOP ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT HIM.

For the love of god, someone sticky this, if I see one more question about protection from everything Im going to off myself. Comment on my Mono B rogues and my G/B combo decks please ;D

One benefit protection provides is: "If a creature has protection from -something- then damage from -something- sources is prevented." This is the case no matter what the protection is from... creatures, a color, a type of permanent, etc.

Protection from black... damage that would be dealt to it by black sources is prevented.

Protection from creatures... damage that would be dealt to it by creatures is prevented.

Protection from everything... damage that would be dealt to it by everything is prevented. I killed your cat! (Why?) I felt it would bring closure to our relationship!

The first letter of the DEBT mnemonic for remembering what "Protection from ~" refers to Damage Prevention, so in both cases, damage from the ~ source is prevented (barring any affects that say damage can't be prevented such as Everlasting Torment).

all is clear now... my questions may seem ridiculous to some but I am a veteran player with no real way to explain my madness to my bros who are new to the game until now. Having solid answers helps keep our games as fair as possible. Thanks for the help Rate and comment on my decks. Some of them aren't completely terrible. I will return the favor. . . If a creature with double strike and trample kills a creature with first strike damage does the normal strike damage hit the player?

Trample will come into play during the First Strike damage step as well. Howevever, assuming the First Strike creature absorbs all of the First Strike damage and if the Double Striking creature is not dead from receiving the First Strike damage, then the normal combat damage will hit the player.

Yeah, just to expand on that, the reason this happens is because trample damage is assigned based on the remainder to be dealt after the blocker is destroyed. When a double-striking creature is blocked, it remains blocked for the duration of combat. The reason that the damage goes through is because the blocking entity is nonexistent during normal combat damage and therefore holds a toughness value of 0. Since 0 damage needs to be assigned to the blocker, the maximum amount can be assigned to the player. ~Latest deck project: Memories of Blood. Any help would be appreciated.~ "Misery loves company. To expand even further and simplify slightly:

When a creature with trample assigns combat damage (first strike or otherwise) you only need to assign enough to destroy the blocking creature. Removing the blocker in any way causes the attacking creature to remain blocked but reduces the damage it needs to assign to 0.

This is important in situations when a trampler is blocked and something like unsummon is cast after the declare blockers step. Comment on my Mono B rogues and my G/B combo decks please ;D

I was wondering:

I always hear about how master transmuter protects itself and other artifacts. How exactly does master transmuter protect itself and other artifacts from targeting spells if when it bounces an artifact that artifact comes into play before the previous spell resolves and leaves play?

Ex: Transmuter is targeted by naturalize. It taps to bounce itself, but the put an artifact back into play is on the stack above the naturalize, so transmuter is in play as the spell resolves. How does that protect it? "If there is such a thing as too much power, I have not discovered it"-Volrath

The original Transmuter is not in play any longer.

When targeting something, it only targets that "instance" of permanent. The Transmuter being targeted by Naturalize is Transmuter A. When it bounces itself, it comes back into play again, making it not the same Transmuter the Naturalize originally wanted to hit, so it comes back as Transmuter B. Transmuter A is no longer in play, so Naturalize gets countered upon resolution.

Momentary Blink, Ghostway, etc., all aid against targeted removal, too. I'm not the most intelligent person on this site, but I'll sure as hell speak as if I am.

Basically, just remember this:

Spells and abilities are dumb, they don't "remember" their targets if it ever leaves play for some reason. Comment on my Mono B rogues and my G/B combo decks please ;D

At the beginning of your untap step anything with phasing does one of two things:

1. If it's in the phased out zone, put it into play.
2. If it's in play, put it in the phased out zone.

Contrary to popular belief, a creature with phasing doesn't "forget" it's prior state when it leaves/enters play. Auras and Equipment phase with their parent permanent. Equipment/Enchantments phasing out individually phase back in onto their original parent permanents. Creatures phasing in do not have summoning sickness.

i've got a question that i know has been reviewd before, but i can't find the answer.

If i'm playing Kitchen Finks, and I play a spell that gives +1/+1, does it negate a -1/-1 completely, as in remove it, or does the -1/-1 stay/come back after the spell resolves? If you mean a Kitchin Finks that has persisted back, it comes into play with a -1/-1 counter.
If you give it +1/+1 until end of turn, it won't remove it.
If you however add a +1/+1 counter on it, the -1/-1 counter and the +1/+1 counter will both disappear, thus negating the -1/-1 counter.

Moo.

If you use CRUSH UNDERFOOT and target your BRION STOUTARM, will you gain the life from his lifelink? CRUSH UNDERFOOT says choose a giant creature you control. "IT" deals damage equal to it's power to target creature. Would the targeted creature's abilities be activated or is it still just the tribal instant doing the damage? Rate and comment on my decks. Some of them aren't completely terrible. I will return the favor. . . Have a JEVIL DAY!!!

Since Crush Underfoot says "_It_ deals damage equal to its power to target creature.", then _It_ will be Brion and you will gain life from the Lifelink.

Reflect Damage just redirects the damage (like 'a "shield" that redirects the damage the source would deal next', according to MTG's Saturday School #74). It doesn't change the source (which in this case is the creature's combat damage), so your opponent should lose half his life after the damage resolves.

Ok, I know of the Painter's Servant + Grindstone combo. My question is wouldnt Grindstone also make you remove cards from your deck also?

... How would it do that? If you targetted yourself, sure, but that would be rather... stupid.
